Rock sockets and base treatment

The part of a bored pile that carries the load into rock. Socket length, roughness and cleanliness decide the capacity; base and shaft grouting can double what a poorly cleaned socket would give.

How it is done

  1. Drill the socket with core barrels or rock augers 1-3 diameters into sound rock as defined by the coring.
  2. Clean the base: cleaning bucket, airlift, and a sediment probe to prove less than 25-50 mm of debris.
  3. Roughen the socket wall (grooving tools) where design relies on shaft resistance.
  4. Base grouting: after concreting, inject grout through tubes to the base to compress debris and pre-load the base; shaft grouting through tube-a-manchette in sands.
  5. Bell-outs (enlarged bases) are used in stiff clay with a belling tool.

Where it fits

  • All rock-socketed shafts; base grouting in sands and weak rock where end bearing is needed.

Where it does not

  • Relying on end bearing on a base that has not been measured clean.

  • Smear of soil on the socket wall, debris at the base, grout leaking around the cage.

Quality assurance

Sediment probe readings before concreting, grout pressure and volume records, O-cell test to confirm socket resistance.

Examples

Base grouting is standard practice in Southeast Asian sands and on many Chinese sea bridge pylons.
