How it is done
- Drill the socket with core barrels or rock augers 1-3 diameters into sound rock as defined by the coring.
- Clean the base: cleaning bucket, airlift, and a sediment probe to prove less than 25-50 mm of debris.
- Roughen the socket wall (grooving tools) where design relies on shaft resistance.
- Base grouting: after concreting, inject grout through tubes to the base to compress debris and pre-load the base; shaft grouting through tube-a-manchette in sands.
- Bell-outs (enlarged bases) are used in stiff clay with a belling tool.
Where it fits
- All rock-socketed shafts; base grouting in sands and weak rock where end bearing is needed.
Where it does not
- Relying on end bearing on a base that has not been measured clean.
