The cable crane method, which has achieved the world’s longest span of 570 metres

2026-10-09

The construction of bridges spanning rugged gorges or wide rivers requires highly sophisticated structural engineering solutions.

The cable crane method plays a pivotal role in overcoming such extreme terrain conditions.

Recently, utilising this method, the Hongshuihe Bridge on the Huangbai Railway successfully completed the assembly of its arch structure.

The key specifications of the bridge are as follows.

Project Name: Hongshuihe Bridge on the Huangbai Railway

Bridge Type: Railway-only arch bridge

Main Span: 570 metres

Key record: World’s longest span for a railway-only arch bridge

The cable crane method is an essential construction technique in environments where it is difficult to install supports at ground level.

Temporary steel towers are erected on both sides of the site and cables are connected to transport heavy materials through the air.

The massive arch members of the Hongshuihe Bridge were also precisely hoisted and assembled using this system.

The successful construction of such a large-scale arch bridge will serve as a key benchmark for infrastructure expansion in mountainous regions.
