Before you can build the bridge, you have to build the path.
The Yisunsin Grand Bridge in Korea is a suspension bridge with a 1,545 m main span a number chosen to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin's birth year and 270 m pylons. When it opened in 2013, it carried the world's 4th-longest span. But today I want to talk about a structure you can't see on the finished bridge: the catwalk.
The main cables of a suspension bridge are erected in mid-air 80 m above the sea, rising to tower tops at 270 m. Every operation of cable erection pulling strands, fixing bands, surveying, adjusting has to happen up there, where there is nothing to stand on. So before any of it, a narrow temporary walkway is hung along the exact curve where the main cable will live. That is the catwalk: an aerial workshop, 1.5 km long, on which the entire cable erection depends.
It looks simple. It isn't.
The catwalk is itself a flexible rope structure. It moves with the wind and changes shape with temperature yet its curve becomes the geometric reference for the main cable to come. That means surveying and adjusting the sag of ropes hanging across 1.5 km of open water, down to centimeters.
Below, a live shipping lane for ultra-large container vessels. Above, winter gales funneling through the strait. Weather windows are always narrower than the schedule wants, and simply getting the first rope across the water is a project in itself.
